Stephen Withnell
Stephen Withnell is a senior advisor in Evercore’s strategic advisory practice focused on the firm’s global metals, materials & mining franchise. He has over 20 years of advisory experience in these sectors, with a particular focus on the U.K. and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
Mr. Withnell serves as a Professor in Practice at Durham University Business School and as a trustee of the London Library. He was previously a managing director and head of metals and mining investment banking in the U.K. and EMEA for Goldman Sachs.
During his career, Mr. Withnell has advised base, bulk and precious metals miners as well as metals processors and services companies. He advises global corporates with a focus on minerals, materials, processes and technologies critical to the global energy transition. Mr. Withnell has worked on over $150 billion in advisory and financing transactions for clients including BHP, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, X2, Xstrata, First Quantum, Boliden, Nyrstar, Triton and Befesa.
Mr. Withnell also dedicated four years to the U.K. education sector. He served as a deputy headmaster of Stonyhurst College and was the founding director of the Stonyhurst Foundation, a charity established to widen access to means-tested bursary funding.
Mr. Withnell has a B.A. (first-class honours) from University of Durham and a DPhil from Oxford University, where he is also a Research Fellow. He is a graduate of the INSEAD International Directors Program.
