Jonathan A. Knee

Senior Managing Director

Jonathan Knee is a Senior Managing Director of the firm’s corporate advisory business.

Prior to joining Evercore, Mr. Knee was a Managing Director and Co-head of Morgan Stanley’s Media Group. He was previously Publishing Sector Head in the Communications, Media and Entertainment Group at Goldman Sachs. Prior to becoming an investment banker, Mr. Knee was Director of International Affairs at United Airlines and served as Adjunct Professor of Law at Northwestern University.

In recent notable transactions, Mr. Knee was involved in the spin-off of Time Warner Cable, the recapitalization of Caesars Entertainment, the Hearst Corporation’s investments in FitchRatings, Wolter Kluwer’s acquisition of UpToDate, NTL’s acquisition of Telewest, the acquisition by Apax Partners of Thomson Learning and subsequent purchase of Houghton Mifflin’s higher education business, as well as the sale of McGraw-Hill Education to Apollo, LoopNet to CoStar, RiskMetrics to MSCI, BNA and BusinessWeek to Bloomberg, eCollege and SchoolNet to Pearson, VNU to a private equity consortia and J.D. Power to The McGraw-Hill Companies.

Mr. Knee is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business where he teaches Media Mergers and Acquisitions and Media Strategy and serves as the Co-Director of the Media Program. Mr. Knee is also affiliated with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism where he teaches a Business Journalism seminar with James Stewart and the Columbia Law School where he teaches Media Policy and Strategy with Professor Tim Wu. His writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and The Atlantic. He is also the author of The Accidental Investment Banker: Inside the Decade that Transformed Wall Street (Oxford: 2006) and co-author of The Curse of The Mogul: What’s Wrong With the World’s Leading Media Companies? (Portfolio: 2009).

Mr. Knee is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Board of Directors of Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, National Women’s Law Center and New Alternatives for Children. Mr. Knee received a J.D. from Yale University, an M.B.A. from Stanford University, an M.Sc. from Trinity College Dublin and a B.A. from Boston University.
